ARCHANGEL

PIECE FOR EXTENDED VIBRAPHONE, 3 INSTRUMENTS AND AUDIO PLAYBACK

Archangel is a piece dedicated to Jonas Weitling and had its premiere in February of 2019. It is a small concerto, with virtuosic vibraphone cadenzas. Because Ryterski did not want to use a regular midi vibraphone, he consulted Jonas and decided to use piezo microphones attached to the bars of the instruments, and connected to a microcontroller (Arduino) - hitting specific bars was sending signal to the computer, which then played specific samples. Throughout the piece, the amount of acoustic and digital sounds vary, resulting in a movement where percussionist do not play anything more, but still making sounds with just gestures (through using motion sensors).

Jonas Weitling commissioned from Ryterski a new piece for percussion and the rest of the Njyd ensemble (flute, saxophone and guitar), that he is a member of. The piece was meant to have a virtuosic vibraphone part. This is how the idea for Archangel emerged.
